What is the difference between Hypnobirthing and Calmbirth?
Many pregnant women are a bit confused about the differences between Hypnobirthing and Calmbirth. The simplest way to distinguish the difference between them is:
Calmbirth is childbirth preparation using relaxation.
Whether you are planning to birth at a hospital, a birthing centre or at home, Hypnobirthing can be of help to prepare you for a shorter, more comfortable birth.
Hypnobirthing and Calmbirth methods are based on similar foundations. Both Calmbirth and Hypnobirthing share the philosophy that birth is a natural, normal process and that a woman’s body is perfectly designed to birth a baby.
I am Katherine Ferris, I teach Hypnobirthing classes, I have also worked with Calmbirth principal Peter Jackson, who was once a Hypnobirthing practitioner himself. Peter was also a teacher or Hypnobirthing Practitioners Instructor and subsequently used a lot of the Hypnobirthing ideas, teachings and insights as foundations for Calmbirth.
Whilst the philosophy and foundations are similar, the Calmbirth relaxation classes are generally taught by midwives, whereas Hypnobirthing classes are taught by qualified hypnotherapists and the focus is on self-hypnosis and pain management.
Obstetricians and midwives are big fans of hypnobirthing. But the biggest fans of hypnobirthing are the birthing women themselves, who share stories of calm, pain-free births. Click here to read many of these Hypnobirthing Birth Stories.
